o Sustainably Produced Charcoal
In Senegal, the production of wood charcoal is the principle cause of deforestation.  It is estimated that nearly 40,000 hectares of forest are cut down each year to supply the cooking needs of towns, dramatically elevating the risk of desertification.  However, charcoal has many qualities that make it an excellent candidate for sustainable fuel source.  Charcoal burns cleanly, reducing the smoke intake associated with wood fires.  When produced well, the cooking power of charcoal actually exceeds the wood that it came from!  And best of all, charcoal can be sustainably produced by carefully pruning and thinning forest stands instead of razing them to the ground!   The naturally regenerated forest at Beersheba now boasts over 50,000 trees on 100 hectares of previously desertified land.  Each year, a small portion of the forest is pruned or thinned, maintaining the health of the forest while producing high-quality charcoal.

Beersheba’s charcoal is produced primarily from the wood of Vachellia (Acacia) seyal, a pioneer species that produces high-quality charcoal. Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora) is also a minor component. These woods produce charcoal that burns slowly and regularly, without unpleasant odors, making them ideal for cook stoves and barbecues.

EcoCharbon is available in 5 kg and 50 kg sacks.

o Meats & Vegetables
Beersheba is a working farm. We produce a variety of high quality meats and vegetables, with an emphasis on land care and safe post-harvest processing. Our livestock and poultry are raised on quality feeds mixed and naturally fermented on site.  What’s in the soil counts, too!  We believe in feeding our soil, not our plants.  Enriched with compost and protected by mulch, our soils produce healthy food and forage without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. All value-added meat products are processed in a climate-controlled environment to ensure safe handling.

The natural boost of nutrients our bodies crave! Moringa has earned a reputation as one of the most nutrient-packed plants known to man.  Beersheba collaborates with local farmers and community members to increase awareness and use of moringa (Moringa oleifera), and to introduce local women to value-added market chains. We emphasize quality post-harvest processing of leaves to maximize nutrient retention and minimize dust inclusion.
